Gems of Fate are essence gems which grant more power-ups after combat but impose penalties to one of the player's ability scores. There are three basic types of Gem of Fate:

  • Warrior's gems, which grant more Health power-ups but impose a penalty to Body.
  • Monk's gems, which grant more Chi power-ups but impose a penalty to Spirit.
  • Scholar's gems, which grant more Focus power-ups but impose a penalty to Focus.

Each of these three kinds of gem comes in two strengths: ordinary and Greater.

Gems of Fate are the opposite of Gems of Forethought, which tip the balance between ability scores and power-up generation in the other direction.

Warrior's Gem of Fate[]

Both grades of the Warrior's Gem of Fate are found at random locations.

In-game description for ordinary gems: "The wearer of this gem gambles away some of his physical ability for the chance that fate will favor him in combat. Some warriors prefer a second wind in combat over a strong opening volley."

In-game description for Greater gems: "Warriors who revel in the chaos of combat find comfort in this gem's machinations of fate. The gem feeds on the warrior's physical capabilities, but it also increases the chances of that warrior getting a second or even a third, wind during battle."

Monk's Gem of Fate[]

Both grades of the Monk's Gem of Fate are found at random locations.

In-game description for ordinary gems: "While it may not seem wise for one to sacrifice one's spiritual nature for a gamble on fate's table, one must certainly see the wisdom in entering a card game with a stacked deck. This gem rewards those willing to make such a sacrifice with more spiritual resources when it is needed most."

In-game description for Greater gems: "One who is content with water every day may never enjoy the taste of wine. Not every master finds wisdom in caution, and those willing to compromise their spiritual abilities with this gem often find Chi power-ups."

Scholar's Gem of Fate[]

Both grades of the Scholar's Gem of Fate are found at random locations.
